When planning a winter getaway in the Canadian Rockies, Jasper is a great destination for a quieter and less touristy experience than nearby Banff National Park.

But as most accommodations close their doors for the season, finding where to stay in Jasper in winter becomes a challenge.

I loved staying in Downtown Jasper to be close to restaurants and just a short drive away from hiking trails and a ski hill.

Let’s get right into the best places to stay in Jasper in winter, including things to do nearby.

3 Best Areas to Stay in Jasper

1. Jasper Town: Where to Stay in Jasper For Convenience

Jasper Town is the most convenient place to stay in Jasper National Park. Not only is it the closest town to the national park’s excitement, but a handful of restaurants and hotels are open throughout the winter. 

You can even walk to some great trails and events right from Jasper. It’s also a great starting point for the Maligne Canyon Icewalk, one of the best winter adventures in Jasper for people of all ages and skill levels.

Jasper Town is the top choice for where to stay in Jasper National Park for convenience, quality, and proximity to all the best the national park offers. It was my favourite place to stay in winter and made a great home base when planning my Jasper itinerary.

Best Places to Stay in Jasper Town

Our Top Choice: Whistler’s Inn

Whistler’s Inn is the perfect choice if you’re looking for a quality Jasper hotel with all the best amenities and an unbeatable location.

Whistler’s Inn is located in the heart of Jasper Town and is near many great restaurants and attractions. It’s only 6 km (3.7 miles) from The Whistler’s Peak Trailhead, a nice walking route even in winter.

The hotel also offers complimentary shuttle services to the slopes, making it a great place to stay for skiers and snowboarders looking to take advantage of the prime location and wintery conditions.

And hello rooftop hot tub to soak in after spending the day outdoors!

Most Unique: Mount Robson Inn

Mount Robson Inn is one of the most popular hotels in Jasper because of its spacious rooms, ample amenities, and friendly staff.

One of the best things about Mount Robson Inn is its location. It’s in downtown Jasper, making it easy to get around and enjoy everything the quintessential town offers.

The hotel also offers complimentary breakfast for guests, which is a nice touch if you have a busy day ahead of you with hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, or anything else around the park.

But if you want to go out for breakfast, my favourite breakfast place Jasper’s Wafflato is a 10-minute walk.

This is one of the most popular accommodations in Jasper that is open in the winter.

Affordable Luxury Hotel: Forest Park Hotel

Forest Park Hotel is the best affordable luxury hotel open throughout the winter in Jasper Town. The hotel is located in Jasper Town.

It’s a little further out of town than some of the Jasper hotels, but it’s still conveniently located. Most activities and things to do in Jasper are just a short drive away.

The hotel has two onsite restaurants and a full-service spa, perfect to return to after a long day of winter adventures. However, if you want more variety, you can easily join Jasper Food Tours to learn about all the best places to dine downtown.

Forest Park Hotel is nicely decorated with a rustic mountain lodge vibe, modern rooms, and amenities. The hotel also has free parking and free wifi. Overall, it’s a great luxury option in Jasper Park.

2. Around Jasper National Park: Best Area For Nature Lovers

Staying in downtown Jasper is the most convenient option, but plenty of hotels around Jasper National Park are perfect for those who want to be more connected to nature.

Most top hotels in Jasper National Park close for the winter because of the low season and fewer tourists, so always check availability before booking. For example, Overlander Mountain Lodge is a popular cabin around Jasper National Park but is closed in winter.

Glacier View Lodge is another unique hotel with direct views of a glacier off Icefields Parkway. However, Glacier View Lodge is also open for spring, summer, and fall.

If you drive Icefields Parkway in the winter, make sure to check the parkway’s road conditions ahead of time for closures.

But don’t worry, there’s still a variety of affordably luxurious and unique hotels around National Park Jasper. Most hotels are just a short drive from downtown Jasper, and many of the best things to do are in Jasper Park.

Our Top Choice: Pyramid Lake Lodge

Pyramid Lake Lodge is one of the best hotels around Jasper, and it is open year-round. The hotel is 10 minutes from downtown Jasper, so you get the best of both worlds.

You’ll be within reach of all the amenities of Jasper Town and in a very peaceful and quiet area, perfect for nature lovers.

The hotel is right on Pyramid Lake, one of the best places in Jasper for ice skating and cross-country skiing. So, you can wake up, grab some ice skates, and go straight to the lake with a warm cup of hot chocolate.

It’s a peaceful hotel with all the luxuries you’d want. The hotel has a terrace with a beautiful view of the mountains, great sledding, and many other advantages. It’s one of the best hotels in Jasper National Park.

Most Unique: Miette Mountains Cabins

Miette Mountains Cabins is a unique Jasper lodging near the well-known Miette Hotsprings in Pocahontas. The Miette Hotsprings are closed during the winter, but there’s still beautiful nature near these winter cabins in Jasper.

Miette Mountains Cabins is one of the few cabin lodgings open year-round, making it a unique and comfortable option.

This is the perfect option for those who want to stay in nature and avoid the hustle and bustle you might find closer to the heart of Jasper National Park.

You might even get lucky and see some wildlife on your drive to and from the hotel. I saw some mountain goats nearby.

Affordable Luxury Hotel: Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is one of the best luxury hotels in Jasper. During the summer months, it’s much more expensive. But because there are fewer travels in winter, the resort is more affordable.

The hotel is the epitome of luxury and comfort, with beautifully decorated rooms, friendly staff, and five-star amenities and services. One of the most beautiful hotels I visited in Jasper.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is also very conveniently located. It’s just outside downtown Jasper, on the other side of the Athabasca River.

You have walking trails, endless views, and first-class service from start to finish. It’s arguably the most well-known accommodation in Jasper, and you’re guaranteed to enjoy your time and the beauty of the Athabasca River here.

And if that’s not enough amenities, they also have a skating rink on Lake Mildred. I enjoyed skating around the lake.

3. Near Jasper National Park: Best Area For Budget Travel

There’s also a handful of reasonable Jasper accommodations near Jasper National Park or on the park’s outskirts. Sometimes, these are more affordable, and other times, they have more of a romantic feel as they’re set back from any heavy tourism.

You should only stay outside the park if you have a rental car because getting around is much more challenging, especially in rough winter conditions.

However, if you’re mobile and don’t mind the extra drive, you can save money by staying outside the park and experiencing some unique activities that you wouldn’t otherwise, like fat tire biking on the trails around Hinton.

Our Top Choice: Hinton Lodge

Hinton Lodge is a simple accommodation in Hinton, the second closest city to Jasper National Park.

The lodge itself isn’t anything impressive. It has a comfortable, higher-end motel vibe to it. However, it’s clean, comfortable, and has all the necessities.

It’s a convenient location for Hinton and one of the best budget-friendly accommodations near Jasper. So, this is the perfect option for those looking to save a little bit of money and don’t mind an hour’s drive to Jasper National Park.

Hinton Lodge also has a free breakfast, a small fitness center, and clean and spacious rooms.

Most Unique: Jasper East Cabins

Jasper East Cabins are secluded mountain cabins near Jasper National Park. The cabins are about 20 minutes from Hinton and 40 minutes from downtown Jasper.

Because of its location, you can easily access both places without hassle.

One of the best things about these cabins is the quiet area and beautiful nature. The cabins are right in the mountains and away from most activities. You genuinely feel connected to nature and can enjoy some downtime during your travels to Jasper.

Jasper East Cabins are only about a three-minute drive from Folding Mountain Brewery, a popular brewery with good food and great drinks.

Affordable Luxury Hotel: Coliseum Mountain Resort

Coliseum Mountain Resort is in Nordegg, Alberta. It’s much further away from Jasper National Park, but it’s worth considering if you want something remote with a different experience.

It’s about 2.5 hours from Jasper National Park, so it’s not the most convenient accommodation in Alberta for those looking to explore Jasper. 

However, if you’re looking for a unique getaway on the lake with a day trip to Jasper, Coliseum Mountain Resort might be worth considering.

The resort is located near Abraham Lake, known for the methane ice bubbles that form under the lake’s crystal-clear ice. It was so cool to see the ice bubbles!

It’s also within walking distance of Coliseum Mountain, so you can bask in picturesque views that will take your breath away.

Coliseum Mountain Resort is made of luxury and beauty, but, you must consider the distance between the resort and Jasper National Park. It’s not the best choice if you want to only explore Jasper and don’t want to explore more of Alberta in winter.

Whether you are staying in Jasper town, inside Jasper National Park, or plan to travel through the park when staying nearby, you will need a Park Pass.

You can buy a Discovery Pass for all Canadian National Parks or a single-location pass if you don’t plan to visit any other parks than Jasper.

Buy your pass online to save time at the gate, or buy it once you arrive. Entry is free for youth under 17, new Canadians, and those travelling with someone with a disability.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Jasper in Winter

With many popular Jasper accommodations closed in winter, finding where to stay in Jasper can be difficult.

Whistler’s Inn is one of Jasper’s best, most centrally-located resorts.

And Pyramid Lake Lodge is another excellent choice just outside of downtown Jasper.

I loved staying in downtown Jasper but would want to try a cabin next time for something different.

Regardless of where you stay in Jasper, you can enjoy all the best winter tours in the beautiful Jasper National Park.
