Day 1 in NYC

Macy’s Christmas Windows

One essential stop on your New York City Christmas vacation is the iconic Macy’s Christmas windows.

Known for their captivating and intricate designs, the Macy’s windows transform into a festive display for the spirit of Christmas.

Each year, the dazzling lights, figurines, and creative scenes show you the magical Christmas world. Some are interactive which makes it fun for all ages.

You can enjoy them day or night, but daytime is better for fewer crowds.

And if you like, you can also do some holiday shopping, as it’s the largest Macy’s store in the US with 8 floors! I love buying winter coats here.

Empire State Building

This iconic New York City skyscraper embraces the holiday spirit by lighting up in Christmas colours.

By day, look over the city to see sights like the Rockefeller Center, Times Square and more. And at night, watch as the building lights up in red and green.

Don’t miss the chance to see the building’s festive lobby decorations, which add a charming touch to the historic landmark. It’s a great opportunity for a Christmas photo.

With a beautiful view of the city lit up, the Empire State Building is sure to be a highlight of your NYC Christmas itinerary.

Check the forecast before you go though, as you can’t see far when it’s rainy or foggy.

I rebooked my visit due to poor weather and then decided to just see what it was like during fog. It was cool but you couldn’t see much detail compared to my first visit at Christmas with a clear night sky.

🤩 Visit Empire State Building for great views of NYC!

Times Square

No NYC itinerary would be complete without a visit to Times Square, the heart of the city that never sleeps.

During the holidays, this iconic spot transforms into a spectacle of lights and colours.

The towering screens come alive with festive ads.

And the Times Square Ball waits to mark the New Year’s countdown. While the ball is much smaller than I thought it would be, It’s a sight you won’t want to miss on your NYC Christmas trip.

If you are planning to go for NYE, you’ll need to go early to get a good spot. I went late and couldn’t see the stage but I could see the ball drop.

Rockefeller Tree

After soaking in the energy of Times Square, make your way to the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Passing Radio City along the way.

This towering tree is decorated with thousands of twinkle lights and topped with a dazzling star. Just one look is sure to bring you holiday cheer.

To make your visit even more magical, rent a pair of skates and skate around the iconic Rockefeller Center ice rink right beneath the tree.

You’ll find skating easier in the early morning and late evening and will want to avoid visiting the area after dusk if you want to avoid crowds. I’ve seen it in daylight and at night and it’s beautiful at any time, but extra crowded at night. Like sardine-can crowded.

Nothing says NYC at Christmas time more than the Rockefeller Tree and skating rink.

🤩 Visit Top of the Rock for more city views!

Saks Fifth Avenue Christmas Windows

Right across the Rockefeller Tree is the Christmas windows of Saks Fifth Avenue.

A cherished tradition of NYC’s holiday scene, these windows annually transform into a cheery display of artistry and imagination. Each has a unique theme.

Admiring the Saks Fifth Avenue Christmas windows, you’ll see why it’s a must for any NYC Christmas trip. They had one of the Rockefeller Center which was my favourite.

At night, you can watch the Saks 5th Avenue Holiday Light Show. The music and design changes each year so it’s always new. It’s so cool to see! But prepare for crowds as it’s a popular Christmas activity.

Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular

A classic part of any New York Christmas itinerary is seeing the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular.

Set in Radio City Music Hall, the show is a vibrant immersion into the holiday spirit, with scenes ranging from the North Pole to Central Park.

Seeing the Rockettes perform is a dazzling experience, certain to fill your heart with joy and make your NYC Christmas trip truly unforgettable.

It features plenty of high-kicks, entertaining choreography, and holiday songs we all know, making the show fun for all ages.

If you aren’t in the holiday spirit before this, you definitely will be after the show!

I was happily bouncing in my seat and singing along the entire performance, wondering why I didn’t go sooner. I thought it might be cheesy but it was so enjoyable. My favourite scene was the Santa song.

Day 2 in NYC

Statue of Liberty

Take a trip to see the iconic Statue of Liberty, a classic symbol of New York City.

You can enjoy the winter skyline of New York from the water while you sail to the island.

While the Statue of Liberty herself doesn’t wear a Santa hat, the holiday spirit is alive with the backdrop of the city’s Christmas lights.

Do remember to bundle up, as the harbour winds can be chilly, and don’t forget to book your tickets in advance to not miss out.

🛥️ Add a Statue of Liberty Cruise to your NYC Christmas trip!

Brooklyn Bridge

The most famous bridge in NYC is the Brooklyn Bridge. And the best way to experience it is by walking across it.

With beautiful views of Manhattan’s skyline, the bridge provides a great backdrop for memorable holiday photos. Some of my favourites were taken on the Brooklyn Bridge.

As you stroll across the bridge, now vendor-free, enjoy the crisp winter air and the view of the East River.

🚶Walk across Brooklyn Bridge and through DUMBO on this walking tour!

DUMBO

Experience the magic of Christmas in NYC with a visit to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass).

This picturesque neighbourhood in Brooklyn is known for its cobblestone streets, views of the bridge and great skyline views of Manhattan. While not decorated for Christmas, the spirit is alive here.

Local boutiques offer the chance to pick up unique holiday gifts, while the many cozy cafes provide a warm escape from the cold. And more opportunities to find hot chocolate.

Don’t miss out on the chance to ice skate at Glide – the newest skating rink in New York City.

🍴 Eat your way through DUMBO on this walking food tour!

Bryant Park Winter Village

Get into the festive spirit at Bryant Park Winter Village.

This charming European-inspired market is home to more than 180 holiday shops, including local boutiques and eateries, making it a perfect spot for holiday shopping.

Besides shopping, you can also enjoy ice skating on the park’s free admission skating rink (you just need to book a slot and bring or rent skates). They booked up during my visit or I would’ve skated here.

At night, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, with the glow of festive lights reflecting off the Christmas tree and buildings surrounding the park.

Get yourself a cup or two of hot chocolate and take a stroll through the holiday market. It’s one of my favourite winter activities. No Chewing Allowed and Max Brenner are some of my favourite hot chocolates at the market.

Where to Stay in NYC for Christmas

When planning where to stay in NYC for Christmas, the best neighbourhoods to be near attractions and transportation are Midtown Manhattan, Koreatown, and Downtown.

Dream Midtown – a 4-star boutique hotel with a rooftop lounge, a short walk to Times Square

EVEN Hotel Times Square – a 4-star hotel close to Times Square near transit

AC Hotel New York Downtown – an affordable luxury hotel near Wall Street and Statue of Liberty

How to Get Around NYC During the Holidays

Choose the NYC subway for a quick, economical, and truly local experience.

Don’t forget to enjoy a leisurely walk down the festively adorned streets, especially Fifth Avenue, or catch a classic yellow cab for a more comfortable journey.

Remember, the holiday rush is part of the NYC Christmas experience, so embrace the hustle and bustle!

One thing to note is, on holidays the Subway operates on the weekend schedule so there will be fewer routes running around the city. You can still get around, but it will take longer. It’s a frustrating experience, but it’s doable.

Here is a NYC Subway map to make getting around easier.

Helpful Tips for Visiting NYC in December

  • Dress in layers to stay warm while outdoors. You can remove extra sweaters as needed during eating and indoor activities.
  • Public washrooms aren’t everywhere. Use the restroom whenever you see one at a restaurant or attraction.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. There is so much walking and you don’t want your feet to die early. Even in running shoes, my feet still died by the end of the day from all the walking we did in NYC
  • There will be crowds everywhere, especially at night. It will make you question if New York at Christmas is worth it, but it totally is and I’d choose to go back a third time.
