Casa Acuario Boutique Hotel Review

A boutique accommodation right on the water, Casa Acuario Boutique Hotel is a great place to stay to experience the feel of Panama overwater bungalows without the price tag. And still be a short boat ride to Bocas town. 

With its name translating to the Aquarium House, it lives up to its name and delivers an unforgettable experience.

Enjoy spacious rooms, relax in a hammock on your private patio while listening to the sounds of boats passing by and the waves around you, or jump off the dock and see the aquatic life below. You might even spot a dolphin out of your room window as I did during my stay.

Let’s get right into everything you need to know about Casa Acuario Bocas del Toro including my review of the property.

About Casa Acuario Boutique Hotel

Casa Acuario is a family-owned hotel characterized by its traditional Caribbean Bocas-style architecture and island vibes. Owned by Mandy and JP, they and their wonderful staff go above and beyond to ensure you have the best stay.

They aim to provide you with a small piece of paradise to allow you to feel the magic of Bocas del Toro. 

Location 

Found on the small car-free island of Carenero, Casa Acuario is a short water taxi ride to the main island of Colon. Its location away from Bocas town makes it slightly quieter but still accessible to get to everywhere else in Bocas del Toro.

Built over the Caribbean Sea, you can see how beautiful the property is, from the water, as you arrive at their private dock. Feel time slow down as you soak in the picturesque island views.

Apart from the sea-level queen and king room, Casa Acuario offers two larger rooms on the second floor, each with an additional double bed.

Need an extra bed in the sea-level room? There is the option of adding an extra twin bed for each sea-level room.

Tip: Bring your favourite toiletries with you, as this eco-conscious hotel does not provide toiletries for your stay. Though rooms do come with the cutest bar of hand soap.

Things We Liked About Our Room and Our Stay at Casa Acuario

  • Relaxing in the hammock in the evening while seeing Bocas town lit up, hearing the music, and looking up to the stars
  • Sleeping in a super comfortable bed after a day of exploring
  • The abundance of amenities and thoughtfulness in all the details of the hotel decor and making guest stays so pleasant, from noise machines to sleep well to kayaks to bug spray
  • The internet is so good, you could work remotely, as the couple in the room next to us was

They offer free luggage storage in a room locked by staff. And it was super helpful that they stored our bags before we could check in, as we had a tour during the day and check-in wasn’t until 3 pm. They are already one of the best Bocas del Toro hotels on the water, but this made me love my stay even more.

Tip: Bring bug spray or use the sprays and oils kindly provided by the hotel. There are sand flies on the island, but sprays, oils, and fans work to keep them away. Using the supplies from the hotel, the sand flies were not much of a bother, and at times, we forgot about them entirely. The owners have caringly thought of every detail and taken care of everything to help you have a great stay. 

Dining

Located on the main floor in the common area is Casa Acuario’s on-site restaurant. They are open for breakfast, with outdoor seating overlooking the water. Talk about breakfast with a view! 

A breakfast made with love, Casa Acuario sources its ingredients with intention and awareness to help support the local community.

Breakfast dishes include eggs, breakfast tacos, pancakes, oatmeal, and yogurt bowls. Drink options include tea, coffee, juice, fresh coconut water, and milk alternatives. My favourite breakfast items were the banana pancakes and the breakfast sandwich.

Prices

Daily rates at Casa Acuario start at 153 USD for a sea-level queen room during the low season. There is a 2-night minimum for stays.

How to Get to Casa Acuario

Once you get to Bocas del Toro from Panama City, you can reach Casa Acuario from Bocas town by water taxi. From town, head to the water taxi station or walk along the waterfront and locals will guide you to the water taxis.

The taxi ride is quick and costs 1 USD per person during the day and 2 USD per person at night. Fares are for each direction. When heading to the hotel, ask the taxi to take you to Casa Acuario, and they will know where it is. 

To return to Bocas town, stand on the hotel’s dock and flag down a water taxi. They pass by frequently all day and evening, so getting to and from the hotel is easy.

Final Thoughts on Casa Acuario Boutique Hotel

In conclusion, I enjoyed my stay at Casa Acuario and didn’t want to leave.

I suggest getting a sea-level room as it was so fun to jump off our patio right into the water and go swimming; that’s my preference.

This luxury accommodation is for those who want to relax near Bocas town but not on Isla Colon.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet the owners as they were out of town during my stay, their staff took good care of us, and we had the best time.

I highly recommend staying at this boutique on-the-water hotel and would love to return.
