11 Adventurous Things to Do in Antigua & Barbuda

The adventures in Antigua are going to win you over with its turquoise water, lush green hills, and endless ways to explore on land and at sea.

From snorkelling at the Pillars of Hercules to ziplining through the rainforest, Antigua and Barbuda has a great mix of thrilling and easy adventures. My trip here made me wish I had booked a longer vacation!

Each one captures a different side of the island and makes Antigua a great destination for soft adventurers.

Let’s get right into the best adventurous things to do in Antigua and Barbuda.

1. Snorkelling with Turtles and Pillars of Hercules

Galleon Beach is one of the best snorkelling spots in Antigua, with calm waters and a chance to see turtles. Just around the corner, you’ll find the Pillars of Hercules, a stunning natural rock formation that’s even more impressive when viewed from the water.

You can snorkel the traditional way or try scooter snorkelling for even more adventure.

I chose regular snorkelling, and spotted a turtle and seeing the Pillars ended up being a highlight of my trip to Antigua. It’s a great 2-in-1 adventure in Antigua, mixing soft adventure and breathtaking scenery.

2. Swim with Stingrays

Swimming with stingrays is one of the most fun adventures in Antigua. If you’ve never done something like this before, it might seem scary, but it’s perfectly safe when done correctly. And it’s so much fun.

At Stingray City in Antigua, there are dozens of wild Southern Stingrays. Even though they’re wild, they’re used to humans and very friendly. There are some simple rules to follow, which your tour guide clearly explains to you before you get in the water.

My best tip is don’t touch the stingrays, but they might touch you! One glided across my leg, and it felt so weird!

This Stingray City Tour includes round-trip transportation to Stingray City, bottled water, alcoholic beverages, a guide, and snorkel equipment. You’ll have about 1.5 hours to swim with the stingrays, which is plenty of time.

3. Full-Day Boat Tour Around Antigua

The most adventurous things to do in Antigua, as with any Caribbean island like Aruba and Barbados, are centered around the ocean. You shouldn’t visit the Caribbean without exploring the ocean.

A boat tour is a great way to explore the island while getting off land and enjoying the views from the water. Most boat tours have other perks, like snorkelling and lunch, making it an easy way to experience the best of Antigua without planning every stop yourself.

This Lobster Lunch Cruise to Bird Island and Paradise Reef is one of the most popular boat tours and includes snorkelling at Paradise Reef, a beachside lobster lunch, and a refreshing rum punch or soda on the beach.

4. Barbuda Day Trip

A day trip to Barbuda is one of the most unforgettable things to do in Antigua and Barbuda. Just a 90-minute ferry or short plane ride away, Barbuda has a pink sand beach, almost no crowds, and an untouched vibe.

Many tours include a visit to Frigate Bird Sanctuary, as well as time to relax or snorkel on Barbuda’s pristine coastline.

It’s a great adventure off the beaten path that mixes nature, wildlife, and the chance to see both islands in one trip.

5. Sunset Catamaran Cruise

There’s nothing quite like ending a day in Antigua on a sunset cruise. Watch the sky turn shades of gold and pink while sipping drinks and enjoying light snacks.

This adventure is more about the experience than adrenaline, but it’s one of the most fun ways to enjoy the island. It’s relaxing, scenic, and perfect for couples or friends. And then you can go for a nice dinner afterwards.

My sunset boat cruise was unfortunately cancelled on the last night of my trip due to poor weather, so I missed out. But I did see some beautiful sunsets in Antigua!

6. Hike to Shirley Heights Lookout

One of the most rewarding adventures in Antigua is hiking to Shirley Heights Lookout

At the top, you’re greeted with sweeping panoramic views over English Harbour, Nelson’s Dockyard, and the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Not only is it the island’s best viewpoint, it’s also a perfect sunset spot.

If you plan to visit on a Sunday, you can also experience the famous Shirley Heights party, complete with steel drum music and local BBQ.

Whether you hike up or choose to drive, Shirley Heights is a must for combining a little adventure with incredible views and a taste of Antiguan culture. I loved this spot!

7. Kayak the Mangroves

For a softer but equally fun adventure in Antigua, hop in a kayak and paddle through the mangroves. These calm waterways are home to a variety of wildlife, from fish swimming under your kayak to seabirds perched in the trees above.

This Mangrove Kayak & Reef Snorkelling Tour combines kayaking with a stop for snorkelling at Cades Reef, making it an adventure packed with variety.

It’s a peaceful way to connect with Antigua’s natural beauty while still getting a bit of activity in.

8. Scuba Diving

If you want to explore further underwater, I recommend scuba diving in Antigua. I went with Dive Carib Antigua and had a great time.

I dove two sites: Carib House (a classic reef dive with tons of marine life) and Black Point (a unique site with boulders left behind from a now-extinct volcano), both were great dives.

I love diving when I travel, but Antigua’s scuba scene is beginner-friendly, making it a great place to try diving for the first time. Certified divers can explore deeper sites with wrecks and larger marine life.

9. Zipline in Antigua’s Rainforest

For some fun away from the beach, ziplining through a lush rainforest is one of the most exciting adventure activities in Antigua.

At Antigua Rainforest Canopy, you’ll experience 10 exciting ziplines, 9 rope challenges, and walk across two suspension bridges. It’s a great way to break up beach days with something different. And it’s beginner-friendly, so even first-timers will feel safe.

With multiple tour options daily, it’s easy to fit this adventure into your itinerary for Antigua.

If you’d like to join a tour with qualified guides, this Antigua Zipline Canopy Adventure from St John’s includes transportation and snacks.

10. Beach Hopping

One of the best outdoor activities in Antigua is simply enjoying the incredible beaches, so beach hopping is a good full-day adventure. I went beach hopping, which was a highlight of my trip, even amongst other activities like scuba diving and island tours.

If you’re a water baby like me, you won’t get tired of the beautiful, white-sand beaches and warm waters. Aruba has better beaches, but Antigua has more dramatic landscapes, giving you a more well-rounded beach experience with incredible views and authentic vibes.

Depending on where you stay in Antigua, you might need a car or to join a guided tour with transportation.

This Most Beautiful Beaches of Antigua Tour is a good choice. The tour goes to Dickenson Bay and Fort James. You’ll get plenty of time to relax, swim, and snorkel.

11. Learn to Sail in English Harbour

English Harbour is one of the Caribbean’s most famous sailing hubs, and you can take a class to learn the ropes.

Most sailing schools offer short, introductory courses perfect for anyone who wants a small taste and doesn’t have much time.  It’s a unique, hands-on way to experience Antigua’s nautical culture and try something new.

If you’re already into sailing, there are touch-up courses and other sailing events around the island at different times. And if you decide to spend more days in Antigua, you can choose a longer course.

Final Thoughts on Adventurous Things to Do in Antigua and Barbuda

There’s no shortage of adventurous things to do in Antigua. Whether you spend your days snorkelling, scuba diving, hiking, or simply watching the sunset from a catamaran, it’s a great place for fun.

One of the most iconic Antigua adventures is swimming with stingrays at Stingray City. This is one of the safest, most popular places in all the Caribbean to do such an activity, and it’s truly unforgettable.

No matter which of these experiences you choose, you’ll get to see the island’s wilder, more authentic side. Just make sure you spend at least a week in Antigua!
